Shining Lights, Week 5 Term 2, 2022
Last week and the coming week are very significant: Laudato Si Week (16-24 May) and National Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June). It's no coincidence that they are so close together. Last May the Australian Catholic Bishops decided on the dates for Laudato Si Week to acknowledge Pope Francis' call in his 2015 encyclical letter that we respond to both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. There's much to learn from First Nations peoples about how to care for the land.
Some of our Social Justice Advocates participated in the Ration Challenge, eating like a Syrian refugee for 3-5 days. Please support them by donating here. Alex Haslam, one of our trainees, has been instrumental in coordinating this initiative and we thank everyone who has donated - so far we are 5th in Australia for a school group, supporting the work of Act for Peace.
Other SJA students will join Caritas Earthcare's virtual Youth Summit on Tuesday 31st May - sharing ideas about how we can further address the 7 Laudato Si Action Goals: the Cry of Earth, the Cry of the Poor, Ecological Economics, Simple Lifestyles, Ecological Education, Ecological Spirituality and Community Involvement and Participation. They will share these ideas with our staff Laudato Si Action Platform Team.
Everyone can get involved with our Mobile Muster School Challenge which runs until the end of June by recycling old mobile phones, mobile phone batteries, chargers, smartwatches, USBs and phone accessories like ear pieces & car kits. Remove your data or transfer it before recycling your phone as all data is destroyed in the recycling process. There are great prizes to be won for the school and we're supporting a circular economy.
Our College will hold our National Reconciliation Week Liturgy on 1st June. This year's theme is Be Brave. Make Change. Common Grace, "a movement of people pursuing Jesus and justice" which includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian leaders reminds us that "Jesus calls us, empowers us, and actually commands us to love one another (John 13:34-35)."
Love, like Reconciliation, must involve taking action. Love in Action involves deep listening and learning. The College has begun the process of developing our own Reconciliation Action Plan, with a staff team to work with the national RAP team and our local community to discern how we can continue to learn, live and love together on "holy ground."
Volunteers for Life!
Rural Fire Brigade volunteers, despite extremes conditions, put their skills and lives on the line to help preserve the property and save the lives of our loved ones. They are a wonderful example od volunteerism is the service of our local communities.
Leadership and Service are two of the foundation stones of our College culture, so the NSW Rural Fire Brigade Cadetship Program, now in its seventh year is an important part of our College program. The Year 11 SLR class enhances student leadership qualities and develops participants as great role models. Students learn tactical firefighting skills, the correct use of terminology, execution of all the equipment, radio communication, survival techniques, safety procedures in all environments and potential career opportunities.
Lumen Christi Catholic College would like to thank Peter Reynolds for coordinating the program and the volunteers of the Pambula and Eden Rural Fire Brigade Station for all the time, effort and use of the facilities to run the Cadetship program for them. The diversity and practicality of the program instils great knowledge and an array of personal lifelong skills that such as teamwork, and community mindedness. Our College culture is enriched in the partnership, sharing in the RFS commitment to fostering and developing youth, ensuring that the spirit of volunteering is perpetuated.
Students going through the motions to develop their Rural Fire Fighting Skills
Our House captains this year are;
Baringa: Nate Bancroft and Delilah Rajic
Bobberrer: Ava Whitby and Nicolas Martino
Monaro: Ryan DeBorre and Amelia Reynolds
Gudu: Skyla Finn-Young and Lily Spinks
Indigenous House Captains: Sophia Thomas and Zoe Veness
Some important roles our house captains play are, running Primary Assemblies, speaking at house assemblies, helping out at events like the Mother’s Day breakfast, Grandparents and Friends Day, Fathers Day Breakfast and Beach Picnic. We are really proud of our house captains this year and how they have stepped up to run activities at our Beach Picnic and Pancake Day to entertain younger students. They have also come up with ideas for a chess club and art club which run during lunchtimes. We are looking forward to seeing what other ideas and initiatives they come up with this year.
The year 5/6 Canberra Camp is next week on Wednesday the 1st of June to Friday the 3rd of June. The camp will not only offer a variety of real world learning experiences for our year five and six students, it will also offer opportunities for them to build confidence, ignite creativity and problem solving, encourage team building, stimulate a sense of adventure and promote independence. We look forward to hearing all about their experiences once they return to school.
