Shining Lights, Week 8, Term 2 2022
Reading aloud to young people
“One of the greatest gifts adults can give – to their offspring and to their society – is to read to children."
Carl Sagan
The above quote is a powerful recognition of the importance of reading aloud to children. According to a wide range of research, reading aloud to young people up to the age of 14 can have the following benefits:
- Develops stronger vocabulary
- Builds connections between the spoken and written word
- Provides enjoyment
- Increases attention span
- Strengthens cognition
- Provides a safe way of exploring strong emotions
- Promotes bonding with others (ABC, 2015).
This is a strategy used across our younger years at Lumen. In Year 8, as shown in the picture below, students have the opportunity as a part of their regular English curriculum to build their skills and enjoy the benefits reading aloud to provides.
Social Justice Advocates Update ...
Year 12 SJA members were involved in a zoom meeting with Caritas Australia on Pancake Tuesday for the official launch. We have already raised $526, meaning we are well on track for our goal of $2500. In Week 10, we will hold a stall selling a variety of incredible earrings made by a member of staff, Tony Mercieca. Earrings will sell for $5 and the money raised will go towards Project Compassion.
Harmony Day Mufti Day
Harmony Day is Monday, 21 March 2022 and the SJA’s have big plans. We’ve organised a school-wide mufti day, with the request that students come to College wearing one item of orange (big or small) to celebrate diversity and belonging. In return, students who participate should make a a gold coin donation for Project Compassion. Modest clothing and covered footwear must be worn.
Harmony Day Poster Competition
We’re also hosting and judging a Harmony Day poster competition. Students are asked to produce a poster which celebrates Harmony Day - get creative, because there are three $25 book vouchers up for grabs in the categories of Kindergarten to Year 2, Year 3 to Year 6 and secondary. Outside of Lumen, there will be an amazing event for Harmony Day held at the Bega Civic Centre on Saturday, 19 March 2022 - please come along!
Sleep On It Challenge
The SJA’s also encourage students to participate in the Sleep On It challenge on Friday, 8 April 2022. Hosted at the Bega Showgrounds, this event reveals what the local experience of homelessness is really like. The overnight portion of Sleep On It is for people 16 years and over, however families can come along to eat from local food vans and listen to live music.
2022 Ration Challenge
A number of Junior SJA members have signed up for another eye opening experience: the 2022 Ration Challenge. We’ll be living on the diet of a Syrian refugee for a week, which will raise both awareness and money for life-saving emergency food and healthcare.
Waste ... it's a simple choice!
Finally, the SJA’s would like to remind families to make simple choices around waste. Please remember that all recyclables go in the yellow bin, FOGO waste (except for citrus) goes in the green buckets, and that soft plastics should go home to be collected and recycled at a participating supermarket.
Cooper Woods shares Olympic Success Secrets with Lumen ADP Students
Cooper Woods, local Olympic celebrity and past Lumen Christi student, came back to school today to talk with our Year 9/10 Athlete Development Program (ADP) squad.
He had the class mesmerised as he talked about life in the Olympic village, his performance and the commitment required to get him there. With the class currently developing their own Strength & Conditioning programs, Cooper elaborated how the 'off the slopes' body conditioning is the foundation to his success. "Ensuring you fuel your body properly, strengthen and prepare your body for performance and mentally cope with the stressors, are 3 key elements I have added to my daily routine" Cooper said.
The class would like to thank Cooper for taking time out to talk them and are looking forward to future visits where Cooper will be practically working with them in the College gym to enhance their programs and techniques.
Sunny Lane, one of the junior ADP squad members also joined in on the lesson hoping to pick up a few tricks or two. Sunny is an inspiring National Champion in snowboarding and may one day find himself in a similar situation.
Secondary Swimming Results
Our Secondary Swimming team went to Queanbeyan on Friday, 11 March 2022 to compete in the Archdiocesan swimming championships. The students conducted themselves very well. Congratulations to all students who competed. Thank you to Mr Thompson, Mrs Dinwoodie and the parents who helped out.
Molly Greenwood and Jack Caldwell did exceptionally well and were named Age Champions. They will now go on and represent the Canberra Goulburn Diocese at the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Championships at Homebush. We wish them luck!

Emotional Literacy
In our Primary Pastoral Program this term we are focusing on “Emotional Literacy.” The program begins with developing a vocabulary around emotions and helps students to recognise and describe emotions. It then progresses through the older year levels into identifying and exploring the expression of emotions in social situations and the impact of emotions on themselves and others and their behaviour.
Art and Chess Clubs
Our Art Club and lunchtime Chess clubs have both had great attendance and it is great to see students having fun together.
Ready to Learn - Being in the right place, fair play and compromise!
We are also continuing to focus on different target behaviours in Primary. Over the next two weeks we are looking for students “Ready to Learn” and that they are in the right place at the right time. We are also looking for students playing fairly and making compromises. |
