Shining Lights - Week 6 Term 1 2022
Learning to "Take a Risk"
Last week at our assembly, our first opportunity to gather as a community, students were challenged to step outside of their comfort zone in their learning and ‘take a risk’ this year. Taking a risk with learning can take many forms from simply attempting to answer questions when someone might normal stay quiet through to sharing gifts and talents, expressing thoughts ideas and opinions in a productive manner and trying something new.
As we enter what is hopefully a return to more normal school life, students are encouraged to take the many opportunities that Lumen offers for them to broaden and enrich their learning. This week, Year 7 Visual Art students have shown a great example of ‘taking a risk’ as they work on developing a symbolic representation of themselves in Pop Art form.

In coming weeks, our Primary House Captains are also running Art Club on Wednesday lunch time and Chess club on Friday lunch time, which are both great initiatives by our leaders.
News from our Junior House Captains
Watch this space for more exciting Primary Pastoral News.
Last week in his Shining Lights article, our Principal Shane Giles, spoke about our College spirit, a spirit of purpose and connection. Participating in Service Hours epitomises this foundational principle of Lumen Christi's mission, with all students encouraged to "inspire hope" and "serve others". In doing so, emulating Jesus Christ.
At the Opening liturgy, where the College Captains were inducted, Shane spoke again of a spirit of faith and a spirit of caring for others and our environment as key characteristics of our House Patron Saints.
In RE and PBL, Year 9 students have been learning about careers and vocations - the difference being that despite a variety of paid work we all have a shared vocation, and that is to serve and form loving relationships. Now that we are in the Season of Lent, it's a great time to reflect on how well we express our humanity through service to others.
Project Compassion 2022
For the remainder of Term 1, Lumen Christi will once again be supporting Project Compassion. Students will be asked to
- Pray and reflect on the needs of vulnerable people
- Give up something that might be a luxury or bad habit (money saved can be put in each PC's Project Compassion Box
- Give to others - perhaps pre-loved clothes, a kind word, or even just time.
Ideally, Lent is a time of self-reflection so let's hope after 40 days we are all a little more grateful, a little more generous and a lot more globally connected. If you'd like to find out more about Project Compassion visit https://www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion/community/
Lumen Students "Giving Back" to communities ...
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, many students give back to our community through a range of service activities such as:
- Clean Up Australia Day - which happens to be this Sunday
- Junior Social Justice Advocates
- Surf Club & the Same Wave program
- Recycling programs at school
- Coaching junior sports teams
- Sports' canteens
- ANZAC Day commemorations
- Rotary Book Fair set up/pack up
- Lunchtime interest groups
- Winter Sleep Outs
- Town Bands
Please encourage your children to look for opportunities to do service; where they volunteer to use their gifts and talents to help others (cleaning their bedroom and other chores are not considered service). If you have suggestions of service activities, please email Antoinette.Woods@cg.catholic.edu.au
